Regionals- Oak Crest, Norway, Michigan...host Niagara

We were quite fortunate to escape the heavy rains, which came only at the very end of today's Regionals.  Wasn't one of our best days for scores...but the course proved difficult for many players throughout the conference.  Of ten high school teams participating, Laona Kellys took 6th place.

Four top teams advance to sectionals...and then three top individual players scoring not of those four teams also move on.  As it would turn out, our Kim Mentz and a player from Elcho tied at 102 for eighteen holes for the third player position and had a playoff.  Some gutsy play and sustained focus proved to go Kim's way...and HOOOoorah, we're off to Sectionals!!!  Congratulations Kim!!!!

Sectionals will be at Foxfire Golf Club in Waupaca, about two hours south of Laona, next week Tuesday.

Here's how it played out...first, our team scores-

May 21-
Kim- 51, 51= 102
Shania- 52, 52= 104
Sam- 54, 58= 112             427 (high score thrown out)
Josh- 57, 52= 109
Aaron- 59, 53= 112

Niagara-        350
Crandon-       375
Wausaukee-  378
Crivitz-           402
Wabeno-        418
Laona-           427
Elcho-            431
Three Lakes-  451
Pembine-        490
Florence-        497

So...for the team our year ends, yet to their credit and our collective hard work, the Kelly's continue to build their legacy and will cheer Kim on as she takes aim at Sectionals...

Its been a tough season...but...

Looking at rain today, we start our last 18 hole conference meet today at noon...here at Laona, Nicolet Country Club...and may serve as practice playing in rain for the bigger day tomorrow, Regionals at Oak Crest...ALSO slotted for rain, thunderstorms.

As I understand...if nine holes manages to get played before being called, by lightning for example, then the Regionals will stick as having been played out.  So, playing your best first nine holes is most important to be sure.

With all the winter we had, we've had to play each meet as 18 holes, each meet playing out as two meets to make up for missed dates.  We lost a whole month of play this year due to snow and cold.  Yet...despite this difficulty, Laona Kelly's have managed to hold second place, first being Crandon and third Wabeno.  Here are standings thus far-

Crandon             42
Laona                 35
Wabeno             31
Elcho                  23
Three Lakes      14
Pembine            14
Florence              4

points are awarded by number of participating teams.  Thus number one at a meet earns 7pts...number two 6 pts, etc., and totalled.

Stroke totals as follows, (remember this is not counting today's final conference meet)

Crandon        1,111
Laona            1,201
Wabeno        1,219
Elcho             1,321
Three Lakes 1,163  (had to miss one nine hole part of a meet)
Pembine       1,592
Florence          498  (missed meets)

As low scorers in our conference-

Sam Belland (Crandon)       206   1st
Kim Mentz  (Laona)              217    2nd
Robbie Rocole  (Wabeno)  233    3rd

for our four other varsity players...scores and placement in the conference are as follows-

Shania Simonis          249     11th
Sam Trebtoske           256     12th
Josh Chitko                 264     13th
Aaron Enders              270      16

out of a field of 27 varsity players from seven school districts

I'll make some adjustments to the conference end results when I have the stats.  We are of course hoping to play our level best at Regionals tomorrow, and win a birth to move on to Sectionals....

(pen names....Sha Ney Ney... DJ...  Ki'mee mee...DQ...Sch'enders)

Following our play, coming in 2nd for our conference...it was eats time at Mikee Dees

Then, as has been a building tradition, coach Seiler likes to reveal one of his fav spots for painting (plein air)...and today it was the Piers Gorge of the Menomonee River...here, a cave was found...Josh and Aaron exploring inside...

Hey...maybe we can all fit in there!   Coach asks, did I ever mention how many spiders like to take up residence in such caves???

Nice looking group...posing before the rapid/falls...of the Piers Gorge

Tied 2nd...

Monday May 7  @  18 holes  Wabeno

Will have scores soon...but, we were delighted to have come in second (tied with Wabeno), in our conference meet last night.

Each match, as eighteen holes...is a makeup meet of two meets...thus second is in essence and score second with two meets.
